Ewwy GUI Rich and Chewy: Dev-Jam 2005

Okay, as an open-source project without tons of money, we have had to bootstrap ourselves for most of our existence. It has actually proven pretty successful, and OpenNMS has been growing rapidly, especially in the last year.

We have been thinking "hey, wouldn't it be great if we had tons of money and could host something like 'OpenNMS World!' and get everyone together for a couple of days". Well, if we waited until we had enough money for anything, we'd never get anything done.

So we are holding the first annual OpenNMS Dev-Jam the first week in November.

What's Dev-Jam? It's a chance for everyone who works on OpenNMS to get together for an intensive week of hacking on OpenNMS code. This year's topic: The OpenNMS GUI.

Matt Brozowski, OpenNMS architect, will be running an aggressive agenda with the goal of vastly improving the OpenNMS GUI.

Why? As a geographically diverse group, we have been able to make OpenNMS better using tools like e-mail, discussion lists and IRC, so can you imagine what could be accomplished if we were face to face for a couple of 20 hour a day coding jags?

Where is Dev-Jam? It will be held in Pittsboro, North Carolina, USA, at The OpenNMS Group office.

When is Dev-Jam? It will start Monday, 31 Oct and last until Friday, 4 Nov. You don't have to be there the whole time, and the main coding push will be 1-3 November.

How do I get to Dev-Jam? Okay, if you want to come, you need to get here on your own dollar. The closet airport is Raleigh/Durham (RDU). Once here we will get you from the airport/bus stop/train, feed you and get you a place to stay, most likely is someone's house.

As you can imagine, space is limited, but we will try to make room for as many people as we can. Please note that this is not the event to come and learn about OpenNMS for the first time. You will need to bring a laptop, your Java skills, and it will help to have some knowledge of Eclipse (show up on Monday if you need to learn more about it) although it's not required.

Please send a note to tarus@opennms.org if you want to come, and watch this space for more information about Dev-Jam 2005.
